A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Dallas has identified potential biomarkers for the improved diagnosis of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) in postmenopausal women. The lack of rapid and accurate diagnostic tools for rUTIs is a significant challenge in managing this condition. The study found that certain urinary cytokines, including IL-8, prostaglandin E2, and IL-13, were elevated in women with active rUTIs, while anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-13 and IL-4 were elevated in women without UTIs. These findings suggest that these cytokines could serve as diagnostic biomarkers for rUTIs in postmenopausal women. Further research is needed to develop immunoassay-based UTI diagnostics using these biomarkers. [Extracted from the article] |
