The Games were significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in strict safety protocols. Diplomatic controversies surrounding the Games are also mentioned, including calls for a boycott due to human rights concerns. The article touches on citizenship issues faced by athletes and controversies in figure skating related to anti-doping violations. It also discusses the decision not to impose a provisional suspension on figure skater Kamila Valieva and the controversy surrounding the medal ceremony for the figure skating team event.
