Abstrakt: This article reports that isolated patches of plants with leaf lesions were found in five crops of salad onions in the Vale of Evesham, England between October 1975 and April 1976. Cultivars affected were White Lisbon, Winter Hardy and Japanese bunching cultivars Kyoto Market and Ishicko Straight Market. Diseased onion leaf tissue contained large numbers of oogonia with either amphigynous or paragynous antheridia and oospores. Results suggested that the isolation of Phytophthora porri from onion leaf lesions would often be unsuccessful unless a selective antibiotic medium was used. Satisfactory control of white tip on leeks in the south-east of England using protective programs of captafol sprays was reported.
