Studies have shown that both grit and social relationships positively affect academic performance. Nonetheless, studies have yet to examine the mechanism linking these three variables. Based on the interactional strategy and personality-relationship transactional theory, this study aims to examine whether the social relationship is a mediator or a moderator for the effects of grit on academic performance. One hundred ten undergraduates were recruited as participants for the online survey through purposive sampling. They were asked to fill in the grit scale, the relationship assessment scale, and their students' grade point average. The results did not find significant moderating effects but a significant complementary mediating effect of the social relationship between grit and academic performance. Based on the findings, future studies may extend the personality-relationship transactional theory to examine the influences of different personalities on social relationships and behavior outcomes in different social contexts.
