Abstrakt: Lisa Rice, the president and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), discusses the racial gap in homeownership in the United States. She explains that while the gap is wider now than during the time when it was legal to discriminate against Black families, the discrimination has shifted from individuals to systems. Rice emphasizes that the enforcement of antidiscrimination laws is crucial, but due to underfunding, the NFHA focuses on education, advocacy, and litigation to close the gap. She also highlights the need to address discriminatory practices in lending, insurance, rental, and zoning, especially as AI tools are increasingly used in the approval of home loans. Rice concludes that the housing problem cannot be solved by money alone, as data shows that high-income Black individuals are still denied mortgages at rates comparable to or higher than low-income white individuals.
