Researchers from the University of Illinois have conducted a study on the use of Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) to detect microstructural changes in collagen-based fibrous tissues. The study focused on musculoskeletal tissues such as ligaments and tendons, which have high heterogeneity. The researchers found that DTI was able to detect microstructural changes caused by mechanical loading that were not apparent at the bulk level. This confirms the potential of DTI as a noninvasive measure of microstructure in collagen-based tissues. The study was supported by various organizations including the Jump ARCHES endowment and the NIH National Institute of Arthritis & Musculoskeletal & Skin Diseases. [Extracted from the article] |
