Abstrakt: Steel reinforcement in building construction is very paramount as the life span of the building depends on the quality of steel reinforcement and the concrete structures. In this study, 25 steel plants with steel rod diameters of 8 mm to 25 mm were investigated by elemental composition test, hardness test and average tensile strength test. Investigation of elemental composition, hardness test and the yield strength of a steel rod with diameters of 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm, 20 mm and 25 mm were carried out. The result of elemental composition shows that most steel plants have good composition according to Nigeria and British standards. But have excessive sulphur and phosphorous contents of 0.01 to 0.86 (wt.%), potassium 0.82 to 3.75 (wt.%) and calcium 0.87 to 2.42 (wt.%), respectively. All 25 samples had met the requirements for hardness by the two specifications. The result of yield strength shows that eight steel plants produced according to Nigeria and the British standard in the range of 474.49 to 707.88 N/mm2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
