The National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) was established 20 years ago to combat foreign terrorism, but the threat has evolved to include domestic terrorism as well. The NCTC is currently unable to take meaningful action against domestic terrorism due to legal restrictions. Recent administrations have recognized the changing threat and have called for more data, information-sharing, and efforts to address the root causes of radicalization and violence. An expansion of the NCTC's mission to include domestic terrorism is urgently needed, as it would provide a centralized intelligence analysis center to identify and respond to emerging threats. This expansion would require executive leadership and congressional action, with careful consideration of civil liberties and legislative oversight. [Extracted from the article] |
