This study assesses the possible beneficial impact of Naringenin (NG) in alleviating testicular dysfunction in a model of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced testicular toxicity. Male rats were categorized into four groups: a control group, a group treated with 5-FU, a group treated with NG, and a group receiving a combination of NG and 5-FU. Sperm morphology, count, motility, viability and histopathological changes were assessed. Sperm count, motility and viability displayed significant deterioration in the 5-FU group, whereas NG treatment exhibited a marked improvement. However, NG administration significantly mitigated these findings particularly in the NG + 5-FU combination group. Histopathological examination revealed severe testicular damage in the 5-FU treated group, including seminiferous tubule atrophy, germ cell detachment and basement membrane distortion. However, the NG + 5-FU combination group exhibited a milder degree of change, suggesting a protective effect. In conclusion, Naringenin demonstrates a significant protective effect against 5-FU-induced testicular toxicity, as evidenced by improvements in sperm parameters and histopathological features. These findings gives thereupatic potential utility of NG in mitigating chemotherapy-induced testicular damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
