In the DOMINO project of the European Union, five member countries participate – Italy, France, Germany, Poland and Bulgaria, and Switzerland where the first Research institute for Organic Agriculture was founded in 1973. The main objectives of the project are to replace industrially produced nitrogen fertilizers and herbicides with leguminous crops, by sowing living mulches that compete with them or possess allelopathic agents. It was established that the leguminous crops white clover and early forage pea used as living mulch inter rows of apple orchards provide the fruit-bearing trees with the necessary macro- and microelements for the proper course of their vegetative and reproductive processes in a high density orchard. The early forage pea are suitable for sowing on the row between the trees, which provide the necessary nitrogen for their development and fruiting. The leguminous crops white clover and forage pea enrich the soil with the nitrogen they fix. To control weeds in apple orchards, leguminous crops should be sown with a higher seeding rate.
