A recent study conducted in Ireland examined the use of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) in pediatric nephrology. The study found that TPE is a safe and well-tolerated therapy for pediatric renal conditions. The research involved a retrospective chart review of 58 pediatric patients who underwent TPE between 2002 and 2019. The most common indication for TPE was neurological involvement in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli haemolytic uraemic syndrome (STEC-HUS). The study concluded that most complications were minor, and adverse events were rare when TPE was conducted in specialized centers. [Extracted from the article] |
