A new report from Busitema University in Uganda provides new data on severe malaria. The study used routine health facility-based data from Apac District Hospital to determine the burden and clinical spectrum of severe malaria in children aged 60 days to 12 years. The study found that 40% of malaria admissions were due to severe malaria, with the most common clinical presentations being fever, cough, and difficulty in breathing. Prolonged hospital stay was associated with difficulty in breathing and prostration. The overall mortality rate was low at 1.3%. The study highlights the importance of improving data quality in order to inform policy, monitor epidemics, and respond to interventions. [Extracted from the article] |
