Abstrakt: Arthur had written the scene for Katie at UCLA, and Alvin and David added a good scene for Hubbell on a boat to balance that. When I heard about early versions of the story…where Hubbell has an affair with the director's wife, the director comes on to Katie, Katie comes on to a tennis pro…I thought all that was ridiculous. I THOUGHT SYDNEY'S STAGING of the breakup scene at the radio station was so smart, with Katie and Hubbell initially separated by the glass wall of the booth. You can see that in a scene near the beginning of the film, when Katie spots Hubbell, seven years after they graduated from college, asleep on his stool at the bar in El Morocco. But I was also thinking of the film as a whole, and worried about having three scenes in a row with tears…since in the next scene, where Katie calls Hubbell on the phone, she can't stop crying.
