Finally, understanding collective and cultural memory as socially shared meanings of the past, expressed through narrative and articulated in actions and interactions, can help memory scholars to go beyond some binary traps that have been set out for them in recent years. This special issue argues for increased cross-fertilization between the fields of cultural and collective memory studies and the field of interactional narrative studies. A turn to interactional narrative studies assists memory scholars in pointing at the "real" that is covered by the collective/cultural memory metaphor: situated narrative actions that concern the past, delivered and performed in specific cultural, political, and interactional contexts.
