The absence of detectable anti-platelet autoantibody in about one-third of ITP patients suggests the presence of alternative mechanisms for platelet destruction. The second outstanding innovation by Mac was I suppression of platelet production in bone marrow i .[3] He described it as follows: In 1982, Heyns et al. used autologous platelet survival studies to calculate I platelet turnover i as a measure of platelet production. The investigators found that many ITP patients had platelet turnover rates that were either normal or reduced rather than increased as would be expected if platelet destruction were the only thrombocytopenic mechanism in ITP.
