This article discusses follow-up observations of adolescent rape victims in a Case Review Study in Baltimore, Maryland. There is ample documentation that reports of rape, defined as violent sexual assault without consent, is increasing nationally. This increase may reflect an actual rise in numbers, better reporting, enhanced interest in the phenomenon, or all of these reasons. But whatever the over-all incidence, the proportion of teenagers experiencing violent sexual assault is high. It is hoped that these observations may help to provide a more suitable structure for the rehabilitation of adolescent rape victims than has existed in the past. Compared with other pathologic conditions, rape may be one of the more serious afflictions of adolescence with respect to longterm psychosocial effects. |
