Abstrakt: A comprehensive life cycle assessment was conducted on fermentation, pyrolysis, and gasification systems to compare their environmental performance of converting corn stover to biofuels. In addition, the normalization method was applied to compare different environmental impact categories. The differences and similarities in their environmental performance were explored, and the reasons for the differences were discussed. Comparatively, based on 1 GJ biofuel consumed, fermentation performs poorly on almost all environmental impact categories, while the equivalent CO2 emission of pyrolysis is the highest. Comparing with pyrolysis, the equivalent CO2 emission reductions can be more than 50% for the other systems. There are also similar regularities in the environmental performance of the three systems. The acidification potential is the most arresting impact category. Biofuel production and agriculture are identified as the processes that mainly affect the environment. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis on all 5 impact categories was conducted, demonstrating that biofuel yield is the most sensitive factor to nearly all impact categories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
