The paper reviews various technologies for fuel economy improvement in gasoline engines and discusses how they interact. Advanced valve train systems, gasoline direct-injection systems, and gasoline homogeneous charge compression ignition mechanisms are considered, together with further technologies which facilitate engine downsizing. Approaches to powertrain hybridization are outlined and a pneumatic system is described which can be used at vehicle launch. Finally, combined technologies are suggested which map the evolution towards meeting future legislative requirements for CO2 emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
