The article cites a study which analyzed indigent parents' comprehension of health education materials. In the study, tests of mothers in a busy urban pediatric emergency room by the Dale-Chall Readability Formula indicated that of those able to read, 15 percent were reading at a fourth-grade level, 30 percent at a sixth-grade level, and 55 percent at or above an eighth-grade level. Reading level correlated best with the educational level attained in school. However, of this population, only 60 percent of those mothers who had gone to high school were reading at an eighth-grade level. |
