The supplementation of Porang tuber flour (Amorphophallus onchophyllus) as prebiotics and its effect on lymphoid organ percentage and heterophile-lymphocyte (H/L) ratio of broiler.

Abstrakt: The immune system is a system that functions to protect the broiler body from disease. The broiler's body immunity is expressed from the weight of some organ such as the bursa of Fabricius and spleen, or the ratio of heterophile-lymphocyte (H/L). To enhance broiler's immunity, farmers can provide a feed additive such as prebiotics. This study aims to identify the effects of Porang tuber flour (Amorphophallus oncophyllus) on lymphoid organ mass and the H/L ratio of broilers. The parameters observed were the percentage of the bursa of Fabricius and spleen, as well as H/L Ratio. This study was conducted according to a completely randomized design consisting of four treatments and five replicates. The treatments consisted of T0: basal ration without Porang tuber flour (control), T1: basal ration+0.4% of Porang tuber flour T2: basal ration+0.8% of Porang tuber flour and T3: basal ration+1.2% of Porang tuber flour. The treatment feed was provided for 35 days of the rearing period. The measurement of the bursa of Fabricius and spleen weight and H/L Ratio was performed at end of the experimental period (35 days old). The results showed that the supplementation of Porang tuber flour in different levels was significantly affected (P<0.05) the percentage of either the bursa of Fabricius or the spleen, but did not significantly affect (P>0.05) the H/L ratio value. It can be concluded that the supplementation of Porang tuber flour as a prebiotic up to the level of 1.2% showed the percentage of the bursa of Fabricius and spleen, and H/L ratio value in the normal conditions.
