Total urinary hydroxyproline was found to be elevated in patients with the diagnoses of acute alcoholic hepatitis and acute viral hepatitis. Normal levels were observed in other hepatic disorders and in acute alcoholism. In alcoholic hepatitis the hydroxyproline excretion could be correlated with total serum bilirubin concentration; no reduction of excretion was observed after prolonged hospitalization although other parameters of parenchymal damage were improved. Although raised hydroxyproline levels were found in acute hepatic injury, a quantitative relationship to histologic signs of fibrogenesis could not be confirmed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
