Abstrakt: This article presents information regarding the spatial heterogeneity of energy turnover in the heart. Despite the morphological uniformity within the left ventricular wall, e.g., in terms of capillary, myofibril and mitochondrial density, there is a substantial amount of spatial heterogeneity of myocardial perfusion. This has been revealed by indicator dilution techniques, molecular tracers, and microspheres. Flow heterogeneity can be described by fractal geometrical relationships and may be related to the known pattern of vessel branching.
