Ectopic intra-abdominal thyroid tissue is a rare clinical entity. Rarely is thyroid tissue found below the diaphragm.3,4 The mechanisms for the presence of intra-abdominal ectopic thyroid tissue are poorly understood. Whilst this theory could explain the presence of thyroid tissue in tissues derived from the foregut endoderm, it does not adequately explain its presence in tissues from mesodermal origin.7 A final yet unlikely mechanism is that of excessive migration of thyroid tissue beyond the diaphragm.3-5 The presence of thyroid tissue in the abdomen is difficult to explain by this theory given the thyroid would need to bypass the diaphragm prior to migrating into the abdomen.
