The Magnetocaloric Effect of Nonstoichiometric ErM2Mnx Compounds (with M = Ni, Co, and Fe).

Abstrakt: The structure and magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of nonstoichiometric ErM2Mnx alloys with M = Ni, Co, and Fe have been studied. ErNi2Mnx alloys with x ≤ 1.25, ErCo2Mnx alloys with x ≤ 0.8, and ErFe2Mnx alloys with x ≤ 0.4 are shown to solidify with the formation of the cubic MgCu2-type structure. The magnetocaloric effect of the ErM2Mnx compounds is estimated based on magnetic measurements and using the thermodynamic Maxwell's relation. The ErFe2Mn0.4 compound is found to demonstrate a plateau-like temperature dependence of the magnetic entropy change over the wide temperature range from 77 to 300 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
