This article focuses on intellectual and personality changes associated with carotid endarterectomy. Occlusion of the carotid arteries is a disorder found in a significant proportion of the population, usually in persons 41 to 70 years of age, particularly men. Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure that attempts to restore the blood flow from the heart to the brain through the diseased carotid artery by the process of incising the artery and removing the occlusion. This investigation indicated significant post-operative improvement on most of the tests except the WAIS, on which improvement was attributed to practice effects. |
