Instabilities of friction stir processing of aluminum-magnesium alloy with a square section pin tool.

Abstrakt: The paper describes of friction stir processing of aluminum-magnesium alloy 5556 by friction stir tool with a square section pin. It is revealed that in the presence of tool contamination of aluminum-silicon alloy under the conditions of non-rigid equipment system with spindle position control "by load" the friction stir processing is unstable. The processing instabilities manifest themselves in the systematic deviation of the tool rotation axis from the equilibrium position, consisting in the precession of the axis during the experiment. In this case, observance of processing parameters close to optimal ones allows obtaining the material of the stir zone with mechanical properties on the level of properties of the base metal. Adjusting and tweaking the processing parameters allows us to reduce the effect of precession of the rotation axis, but it was not possible to avoid it until the complete removal of the contamination from the aluminum-silicon alloy.
