Abstrakt: Systomus sarana (Hamilton, 1822) is mostly found in tropical freshwater bodies and has higher market price than that of the Indian major carps. Henceforth the olive barb is likely to be employed as the candidate species for aquaculture purpose in the carp polyculture. The detailed information on distribution, identification, captive brood-stock development, induced breeding, larval rearing and seed production and grow-out culture of Systomus sarana is discussed in this communication. The natural stock of Systomus sarana is declining rapidly with increasing fishing pressure and the information presented here could be of conservation importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
