A novel biosorbent for the sequestration of phosphate from the water was explored by loading Zr(IV) onto saponified watermelon rind (SWR). SEM, FT-IR and EDX were carried out for the structural characterization of the biosorbent. Several factors including the influence of other interfering anions were evaluated. The maximum biosorption capacity for phosphate was found to be 27.63 mg/g at a pH of 4.0. The presence of interfering anions in the biosorption of phosphate onto Zr(IV)-SWR had no significant effect. The adsorbed phosphate was almost completely eluted by 0.3 M NaOH. The Zr(IV)-SWR biosorbent can be used as an alternative material for the sequestration of phosphate from water.
