The pressure vessel is the current equipment that carries fluid, gas, or some solids under pressure. It can be very dangerous if it is neglected. Pitting corrosion is one of the failures that might be difficult to predict. To ensure safe usage of the vessel and to accurately predict and assess, it is necessary to comprehend the effect of pitting corrosion on the mechanical property of the material. The elastic modulus and the yield strength were investigated. A finite element analysis was performed with pitted plates subjected to a tension load. The results showed that the elastic modulus and the yield strength decreased with an increase in the percentage of volume damage by pitting or a decrease in equivalent thickness. It was found that calculating the reduction of the elastic modulus and the yield strength was more specific than simulating it due to the stress concentrator from pitting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
