Abstrakt: This article presents information about AIDS. The AIDS is a highly lethal new epidemic that predominantly affects young men of homosexual or bisexual orientation. Significant progress has been made concerning the epidemiology, etiology, and clinical behavior of this complex disease and its sequel since the first cases were reported in 1981. The underlying cell-mediated immune dysfunction that characterizes AIDS is apparently due to a T-cell lymphotropic retrovirus, HTLV-lll. This virus infects T-helper cells or their precursors, leading to their destruction. This, in its turn, causes an irreversible state of cellular immune deficiency, predisposing to a variety of opportunistic infections.
