The article reports that the androgen status of the hirsute woman can be assessed readily now as techniques for measuring circulating hormone levels are widely available. Unfortunately, routine discriminatory tests to detect a source of abnormal androgen production are yet to be established, but an androgen secreting tumor usually can be detected if a complete androgen profile is performed when clinically indicated. Steroid metabolism is so complex that it is unreasonable to expect a dermatologist without a special interest in androgen-dependent cutaneous syndromes to be familiar with the numerous enzymatic steps involved in the conversion of cholesterol to testosterone or the pathways of intracellular androgen interconversion. |
