The effect of characterization of carbide end milled limestones on optimal parameters.

Abstrakt: This study investigated optimal combinations of parameters to improve the production performance and product quality in milling limestones on a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. Experiments were performed on four types of limestone rocks of sedimentary origin. The experiments were conducted using a Taguchi L9 orthogonal array design on a 6-mm carbide cutting tool on the CNC. The signal/noise (S/N) ratio was determined using the Taguchi method for the optimal machining parameters of limestones. The effects of the parameters on surface roughness were determined using analysis of variance. It is time-consuming and expensive to determine surface characteristics that appeal to customers. The optimal machining parameters depend on the heterogeneous structure and characteristics of the limestone, such as crack width and grain size. This, in turn, affects the surface quality due to insert cutting or breaking instead of insert cutting. Confirmation tests were conducted to select the optimal machining parameters for milling heterogeneous limestones. The optimal machining parameters were determined using carbide end milling to help both manufacturers to produce new tools and operators to improve product quality and reduce machining costs.
