Abstrakt: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous micro-organic pollutants that originate primarily from natural and anthropogenic activities. Water pollution due to such micro-organic contaminants is a serious problem because of their acutely toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic nature. Therefore, a sustainable remediation technique is essential for the elimination of PAHs from contaminated sites. PAH biosorption is the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly cleanup strategy; however, it is limited due to the sparingly water-soluble nature of PAHs. This paper provides a scientific comparison of the literature for PAHs biosorption through different biosorbents under different conditions. This review presents a critical summarization of PAH biosorption using different biosorbents. The role of physical or chemical alteration of biosorbents for PAH removal is introduced. The use of different biosorbents in PAH biosorption from aqueous solutions is discussed. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic investigations of PAH biosorption using different biosorbents as well as biosorption mechanisms and desorption of PAHs are discussed. It is concluded that many biosorbents have shown a great potential for detoxification of PAHs from aqueous environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
