Abstrakt: As the components of fixed orthodontic appliance cause plaque retention, it is considered to be an important etiological factor in the enamel demineralization. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different brackets types on S. mutans count whileusing herbal toothpaste. Plaque samples were collected from the buccal surface of premolar teeth of twenty right handed patients, who have done an orthodontic treatment, a hookless stainless steel bracket bonded on tooth number 14 and a hookless sapphire bracket on tooth number 24, the samples were taken before bonding as a base line record, after 48h of bonding during which patients instructed to use only tooth brush without toothpaste or any other chemicals and after 2 weeks during which the patients instructed to use a herbal toothpaste. The calculation of the streptococcus mutans count was done via plate counting method using colony counter. Wilcoxon Signed - Ranks Test is used to compare between right and left side on three intervals, results showed that stainless steel bracket when used with herbal toothpastes showed more reduction of S. mutans as compared to sapphire bracket, but no statistically significant difference noted between both types of the brackets. In cinclusion, herbal toothpaste is clinically efficient in reducing S. mutans colony counts around stainless steel and sapphire brackets. This would be a useful innovation due tothe difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
