While reading The Diary of VaslavNijinsky, I noticed the followingrather mystical pronouncement:"You are he and I am he. Andrew Mitchell Duck hive mind Nick Maloret's account of a groupof 10 ducks "waddling towardshim" in South Harting [FT381:75]reminded me of a phenomenonthat used to be observable inthe Suffolk village of Westleton.The village's duck colony on thevillage pond (it had an informal"duck warden" who kept an eyeon them) used to be a ragtaggroup of mostly mallards, butalso some khaki Compton's, theodd Chinese water duck and theoccasional Muscovy duck. Then one year all the duckswere suddenly weird-lookingmallard/khaki Compton hybrids.(My late mother told me thatvariety of duck was called khakiComptons -- dark brown with awhite chest.) They didn't seemparticularly fertile hybrids; therewere only a few small, weird-lookingblack ducklings thatyear.
