Background: This study was designed to investigate the effects of hyperthermic intraperitoneal mitomycin-C (HIMMC) treatment plus preoperative radiotherapy on colonic healing. Anastomotic leak and mortality rates were significantly higher in HIMMC and radiotherapy (RT)+HIMMC groups compared to others. RT, HIMMC and their combination affected bursting pressures adversely. The lowest hydroxyproline levels were found in RT+HIMMC group. These data suggest that HIMMC treatment and its combination with preoperative radiotherapy have undesired side effects on colonic anastomosis. |
