Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are an important part of the management of patients with end stage heart disease either as a bridge to cardiac transplantation or as definitive therapy in patients who for one reason or another are not eligible for transplantation. When a patient with a VAD undergoes heart transplantation, the driveline is removed from the patient and thrown in the contaminated waste. One patient in one institution was transplanted and a common sense transplant co-ordinator saved the explanted driveline. [Extracted from the article] |
