Abstrakt: Postmodern criticism might caution us against looking for stories in art, but event paintings of the Belle Époque were all about story. And in many of these works, the appeal to audiences was celebrity gossip. Close observation and investigation suggest that Julius LeBlanc Stewart's masterpiece has at its center a religious scandal, perhaps the main reason the painting's historical inspiration has been a mystery for more than a century.
