It was revealed that BMI and body weight decrease significantly compared with placebo by ingesting the food containing ellagic acid derived from the African mango for 12 weeks. The African mango is a plant native to central Africa and India, and has long been used in Africa as a medicinal herb that caues weight loss or suppresses appetite. The ellagic acid contained in the African mango is one kind of polyphenol found in many vegetables and fruits, and has strong antioxidative action. From our study, it is considered that the ellagic acid suppressed the growth of existing fat cells and inhibited the formation of new adipose cells, consequently prevented from increasing in fat. Moreover, the improvement of QOL was suggested. In addition, the safety of the food containing ellagic acid derived from African mango was also elucidated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
