Tobacco is being used in various forms. Smoking type includes bidis, cigarettes, cigars and others. Smokeless tobacco products are Betel quid, mawa, dry snuff and many more. By 2020, it is predicted that tobacco will account for 13% of all deaths in India. Oral cavity is the first to encounter tobacco and the major tobacco related oral lesions are tooth stains, abrasions, Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis (ANUG), Periodontitis, dental implant failure, smoker's melanosis, nicotinic stomatitis, palatal erosions, pre-malignant lesions and oral carcinoma. Active role of dental professionals in tobacco control initiatives and cessation programmes is important due to their direct contact with patients who are at increased risk.
