This short paper reports on a small scale study initiated by a high school student in the USA in collaboration with a university department. The authors aimed to encourage social interaction in preschool autistic children with their peers and teachers through playing a game of kickball. They were taught particular gestures and verbal messages and prompted to use these. Over the course of five sessions, their use of these increased as did the amount of child initiated interactions. Similar methods could be used with other sports throughout their school and adult lives to enhance interaction and inclusion in both mainstream and special settings. Over time, the children can then develop more spontaneous and self generated responses without the need for prompts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
