A programme of archaeological watching brief and excavation was undertaken at the former council depot, Mill Road, Hertford during the summer and autumn of 2005. Stripping the site revealed archaeological features occupying an area measuring approximately 54m north-south by 38m east-west. Despite heavy recent truncation, the bases of a number of large postholes in NNW-SSE and WSW-ENE linear arrangements were present. When excavated, the features consistently produced finds of medieval date. They indicated a large structure or structures, probably dating to the twelfth century. An earlier, smaller six-post construction was identified towards the south of the site, and appeared to be of early to middle Saxon date. Towards the northwest of the stripped area a concentration of residual prehistoric struck flint was recovered. A small number of post-medieval features were also excavated. Also included are an addendum on work carried out in 2010-11 on land at St John's Street, Hertford, adjacent to the Mill Road site; and a note from Martin Hicks suggesting that the large postholes could represent the growing of willow or poplar as a crop. Whether structural or a plantation, the features are presumably the result of riverbank activity by the medieval Priory of St Mary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
