Next generation sequencing (NGS) has become one of the key methods in today's life science research. It facilitates the identification of novel species, as well as characterization of samples drawn from complex ecosystems all over the world. Here, we demonstrate the potential of NGS for the identification of industrially relevant gene clusters from single microbial species to complete characterization of pathways facilitated by complex microbial communities as shown for biogas synthesis.
