Abstrakt: In a comparative investigation in vitro, leakage of retrograde fillings of amalgam, glass ionomer cement and heat-scaled gutta-percha was determined using a dye-leakage technique. The leakage was investigated both after 24 hours and after 1 year. A statistically significant higher degree of leakage of amalgam compared with glass ionomer cement was demonstrated both after 24 hours and alter 1 year in teeth with radiologically dense root fillings. Statistical analysis also showed a significantly higher incidence of leakage of retrograde fillings of amalgam when the root canals were not filled with gutta-percha compared with retrograde fillings of glass ionomer cement under the same conditions. It was also statistically verified that no changes in leakage appeared over a time period of 1 year, either for amalgam or for glass ionomer cement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
