The Author analyzes and explains the key views of M. Bobginskii, the prominent Polish historian and political figure of the late XIX and early XX century on the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks of the early seventeenth century, outlined in his fundamental paper «Sketch on History of Poland». The main aim of this article is to find out how the historian considered the meaning of the XVII century. for the historical development of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, how he estimated and described the beginning of this era and what place in it the events was taken by the Ukrainian Cossacks and their outstanding representatives, in particular P.
