Microwave propagation characteristics in earth-satellite links during sand and dust storms are sensitive to the shape of particles, the height of such storms, and the elevation angle. In this article, the formulas of total attenuation and phase shift in earth-satellite links for spherical sand and dust particles are developed in terms of visibility, frequency, elevation angle, and height. Obtained results of the total attenuation indicated that the simulated values of the proposed formula are consistent with the values by Sharif's formula. The formulas of attenuation and phase shift in earth-satellite links are also given for the vertical and horizontal polarizations. Compared with the wave attenuation of horizontal and vertical polarizations, the calculated results of our proposed formula are consistent with the results of Sharif's formula and are greater than the results of the formula presented by Yin and Wan. The models of cross-polarization discrimination are obtained and compared with existing models by calculation. The problem of depolarization was also investigated by computing the cross-polarization discrimination for different frequency and elevation angle. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
