The article discusses the effectiveness of error correcting code (ECC) technology in improving the operation of storage and communication systems like flash memories and solid-state devices. Also cited are a brief history of coding theory including the works of Claude Elwood Shannon and Richard Hamming, the error control coding techniques called forward error correction (FEC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ), and the taxonomy of FEC like block codes and convolutional codes. |
