The article examines the relationship between audit-related risk and the second partner review (SPR). The SPR is one of the several procedures capable of reducing the incidence of fraudulent financial reporting. If the SPR serves as an audit-related risk-reduction technique, it is reasonable to expect more extensive SPR when there is the expectation that the firm's normal audit procedures may fail to detect deficiencies in the financial statements or audit reports. A number of client and engagement-specific factors contribute to this expectation. Client characteristics that may influence the extent of SPR range from inadequate records to complex reporting requirements. Engagement specific factors include firm policies and procedures, the experience of audit personnel and the firm's experience with a specific client or industry. Binary variables are used to indicate the presence or absence of the following attributes, client reported net loss, initial audit engagement, audit report modification and client special risk situations. |
