Abstrakt: Background and Objective: Nail biting is a common habit among the children and young adult. Nail biting etiologies include anxiety, stress loneliness, imitation of other family members and heredity. Nail biting children are at risk of developing malocclusion of the anterior teeth, onychomycosis and paronychia. Treatment should be directed to the causes but care of the nails, cuticles and behavioral modification techniques, are important aspects of treatment. Some studies that classified this habit as a kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder suggest that SSRIs is a good choice for the treatment .This study compared the effectiveness of two treatment methods, imipramine and Alarm Armlet. Method: One hundred fifty seven patients were included in our study, 48 patients in imipramine and 109 patients in Alarm Armlet group. The Alarm Armlet bonds to the patient's extended arm, whenever the patient's arm becomes flexed for nail biting the Alarm Armlet begins to vibrate and reminds the person not to bite her or his nail. We took the satisfaction of patients and report of withdraw the habit and increase their nail growth, as positive response to treatment. Results: The number of treated nail biters were 85 from 109 (78%) in Armlet Alarm group and 18 from 48 (37.5%) in imipramine group. The treatment results were equal in both sexes. The mean days positive response to treatment with Alarm Armlet and imipramine was 13 and 23 days prospectively (p-value=0.00). Conclusion: Our study showed that the treatment of nail biting with Alarm Armlet is more effective than imipramine. The result of this study shows that the use of Alarm Armlet can have better and faster result compare with imipramine. Alarm Armlet method is more effective in patients older than10 years old.
