Abstrakt: The article focused on Kevin Brown, Los Angeles right-hander, who overcame elbow and back injuries to regain his rating as one of the premier starters in the National League, for the Dodgers. But Physically, Brown's back hurt so much late last season that, even after a series of pain-killing injections, "just walking was a chore," he says. Emotionally, too, Brown is capable of hurting. Brown, 38, scoffs at the notion he was trying to remake his image. Through his work with a doctor and a physical therapist in the off-season, Brown says he realized that the surgery he had, while relieving his pain initially, created other problems. Brown had a nine-game winning streak early in the season, during which he posted a 1.27 ERA in 71 innings, with 59 strikeouts and 13 walks. His velocity steadily climbed earlier in the season and grew to his customary mid-90's mph range. Brown's accomplishments in the off-season, spring training and through most of this year were impressive, perhaps stunning given his age and physical setbacks. The article also includes a chart showing eight pitchers who have struck out since 1900.
